About PP Cups
The Cold Cup Standard for High-Volume Branded Beverage Operations
Polypropylene (PP) is the single most used cold-drink cup plastic in the United States — and for good reason. It sits at the intersection of durability, cost, safety, and print quality that no other single material consistently achieves. PP is BPA-free by chemistry, recyclable (#5), crack-resistant under impact, and available in a wider size range (9oz to 32oz) than any other plastic cup we offer.
PP's defining physical property is its flexibility. Unlike rigid PS (polystyrene), PP flexes slightly under stress, making it far more resistant to cracking when dropped or squeezed. In high-traffic environments — stadiums, gyms, campus dining, theme parks — this flexibility translates directly to fewer broken cups and less waste.
Printing on PP requires a critical preparatory step: corona treatment. PP has a naturally low surface energy — inks don't bond to it reliably without surface preparation. High-voltage corona discharge oxidizes the PP surface, creating chemical bonding sites that allow screen-printing inks to adhere firmly and permanently. Every PP cup we print is corona-treated before ink is applied. This is a step some low-cost printers skip, resulting in logos that peel or chip within days of service.
For most branded cold-drink operations, PP delivers the best balance of brand impact, cost, and operational durability of any cold-cup material available. The widest size range, competitive unit pricing, and proven durability in the highest-volume environments in the country explain why PP holds the #1 position in US cold-cup usage year after year.
Polypropylene (PP)
The Everyday Brand Workhorse
PP powers the branded cup programs of smoothie bars, boba shops, frozen yogurt chains, and campus dining operations. Cost-competitive, crack-resistant, BPA-free — the cold cup that works in any high-volume environment.
Crack-Resistant Flexibility
PP flexes under impact rather than fracturing. Significantly more drop-resistant than rigid PS — ideal for busy environments where cups get handled, dropped, and squeezed.
Corona-Treated for Lasting Ink Adhesion
Every PP cup is corona-treated before printing — the step that ensures logos stay vivid through normal handling. We don't skip it.
Widest Size Range — Up to 32oz
9oz to 32oz across 6 sizes. The only cold-cup plastic we offer in 32oz — ideal for large-format iced teas, lemonades, and oversized cold drinks.
BPA-Free, Recyclable #5
No bisphenol-A by chemistry. Recyclable #5 — acceptance varies by municipality, with improving availability across US markets.

Production Process
How We Screen Print PP Plastic Cups
Artwork Review & Digital Proof
We review your artwork for file quality, color setup, and printability on PP's semi-translucent surface. A digital proof is prepared and sent for your written approval before any production begins.
Corona Surface Treatment
Every PP cup passes through our corona treatment station before printing. High-voltage electrical discharge oxidizes the cup surface, creating chemical bonding sites for ink adhesion. This step is mandatory — we do not skip it on any order.
Screen Setup & Registration
Screens are prepared for each color in the design. Multi-color registration is set with precise mechanical stops to ensure color alignment accuracy of ±0.5mm across the print run.
Multi-Pass Color Printing
Each color is applied in a separate printing pass. Inks are UV-cured between each pass to prevent mixing and ensure clean color borders. Up to 3 spot colors available per design.
Final UV Cure & Adhesion Test
After all colors are applied, a final UV cure locks ink permanently to the corona-treated surface. Random adhesion testing (tape pull test on sample cups) confirms ink bond quality before the run is accepted.
Quality Inspection & Shipment
Color accuracy, registration, surface defects, and print completeness are verified across a sample of each run. Approved cups are sleeved and packed in protective cartons for ground shipping.

FAQ
PP Cup Questions — Answered
Why is PP the most popular cold-drink cup in the USA?
PP combines the most important attributes for cold-drink brand operators: BPA-free by chemistry, recyclable #5, crack-resistant under impact, frozen-drink compatible, and available in the widest size range (9oz–32oz). Printed colors appear bold and saturated due to PP's slight translucency. Cost-competitive pricing at volume makes it accessible for brand programs of any size.
What is corona treatment and why does PP need it?
PP has a naturally low surface energy — inks don't bond well to it without surface preparation. Corona treatment uses high-voltage electrical discharge to oxidize the PP surface, creating chemical bonding sites that allow screen-printing inks to adhere permanently. Without it, inks on PP can peel or chip within days of service. Every PP cup we print is corona-treated before any ink is applied — this step is standard and non-negotiable.
Can PP cups hold hot beverages?
PP is rated to about 140°F — not suitable for hot coffee or tea. The cup can soften and deform above that temperature, creating a spill risk. For hot beverages, see our paper cups (200°F) or PS cups (175°F).
Are PP cups BPA-free?
Yes. Polypropylene chemistry does not use bisphenol-A at any stage of production. PP is inherently BPA-free — no special formulation or certification required. All HT Printers PP cups are BPA-free and FDA compliant for cold food and beverage contact.
Will PP cups crack when dropped?
PP is a flexible, semi-crystalline plastic — it flexes under impact rather than fracturing. A filled PP cup dropped from table height will generally survive without cracking. This is a significant durability advantage over PS rigid cups in high-traffic venues like stadiums, gyms, and fast-casual restaurants.
Are PP cups recyclable?
Yes — PP is recycling code #5. Curbside acceptance of #5 varies by municipality. Availability has been improving in recent years. For eco-committed brands, check local recycling program coverage for your target markets before making #5 recyclability claims to customers.
Can PP cups be used for frozen drinks?
Yes. PP remains flexible at cold temperatures and doesn't become brittle when in contact with frozen beverages. This makes PP a better choice than PS for slushies, frozen lemonade, frozen cocktails, and frosted drinks.
What is the largest PP cup size available?
The largest size is 32oz — available only in PP among our plastic cold cup options. The full PP size range is 9oz, 12oz, 16oz, 20oz, 24oz, and 32oz.
How does PP compare to PET for branded cold cups?
PET is crystal-clear (glass-like transparency) while PP is semi-translucent. PET is better when the drink color is a visual brand feature. PP is better for opaque bold-color branding and is more crack-resistant. PET has better resistance to acidic and alcoholic drinks. PP is typically less expensive at equivalent volumes. Both are cold-drink-only materials.
Do I need a white underbase for PP cup printing?
Not always. PP's slight translucency is enough to make most solid colors appear bold without a white underbase. For light-colored designs requiring maximum opacity on the cup's translucent surface, a white underbase may be recommended — we flag this during the free artwork review included with every order.
What is the minimum order for PP cups?
MOQ is 250 units per design. Volume pricing steps down at 500, 1,000, 2,500, and 5,000+ units. Each unique design has its own 250-unit MOQ.
What is the lead time for custom PP cups?
Standard lead time is 7 business days from artwork approval. Rush production (3 business days) is available for a surcharge. Most US destinations receive orders within 1–3 business days after production via ground shipping.
Can I get Pantone-matched colors on PP cups?
Yes — Pantone color matching is available on orders of 500 units or more. For orders of 250 units, we match as closely as possible to your Pantone specification using our standard ink mixing system. The free digital proof shows the expected color before production begins.
