About PET Cups
The Premium Visual Choice for Cold Beverage Branding
PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is the same polymer used in high-clarity water bottles and premium food packaging — and it brings that glass-like optical clarity to custom printed disposable cups. Where PP cups are translucent-to-opaque and foam cups are completely opaque, PET is essentially transparent, allowing the drink's natural color to show through the cup wall as part of the visual experience.
This transparency is PET's defining competitive advantage for branding. A vibrant green matcha latte, a layered sunrise cocktail, a deep ruby iced hibiscus tea — in a PET cup with your logo printed on the wall, the drink becomes part of the brand presentation. The cup doesn't just carry the brand; the brand and the product display together. This is why PET has become the default cup for premium juice bars, craft cocktail venues, and specialty beverage brands that treat their drinks as visual products.
Screen printing on PET requires an important decision: with or without a white underbase. Printing directly on clear PET without a white underbase produces a translucent-ink effect — colors appear semi-transparent and shift in appearance depending on the drink inside. With a white underbase beneath the colored artwork, colors become fully opaque and vivid regardless of what's in the cup. Both techniques have legitimate applications depending on your brand aesthetic.
From a sustainability standpoint, PET is recycling code #1 — the most recycled plastic in the USA. It is accepted at virtually every US curbside recycling program. Our printed PET cups remain fully recyclable — the exterior screen print does not interfere with the recycling process.
Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET)
When the Drink Is Part of the Brand
PET's crystal clarity turns every cold drink into a visual display. The logo on the cup and the color of the drink work together — creating a branded experience that no opaque cup can replicate.
Glass-Like Optical Clarity
The highest transparency of any cup plastic. Drink color shows through fully — naturally enhancing the visual impact of colorful beverages.
Recyclable #1 — Widest Acceptance
PET code #1 is accepted at virtually every US curbside recycling program — more broadly than any other plastic cup material.
Excellent Alcohol Resistance
Superior chemical resistance to acidic drinks, juices, and alcoholic beverages — better than PP for bar and brewery applications.
Two Print Techniques Available
White underbase for vivid opaque colors, or transparent-ink effect for a premium translucent look. We help you choose the right approach for your brand.
Print Technique
With or Without White Underbase — Two Very Different Looks
The most important decision for PET cup printing is whether to use a white underbase. Here is what each technique produces:
⬜ With White Underbase (Most Common)
A white ink layer is printed first beneath all colored artwork. This creates a fully opaque background that makes colors vivid, saturated, and consistent regardless of what's inside the cup. Your logo looks exactly as designed — no drink-color interference. Best for: brands that need color-accurate logos, text-heavy designs, or consistent appearance across all drink types.
🪟 Without White Underbase (Translucent Effect)
Colors are printed directly on clear PET. Inks appear semi-transparent — the drink color shows through and interacts with the printed colors, creating a layered visual effect. This can look stunning for minimalist logos or tinted-glass aesthetics. Appearance changes based on drink color. Best for: brands with simple logos, transparent-aesthetic brands, premium cocktail bars.

Who Uses Custom Printed PET Clear Cups?
Production Process
How We Screen Print PET Clear Cups
Artwork Review & Underbase Decision
We review your artwork and confirm your preference: white underbase for opaque vivid colors, or transparent-ink effect for a translucent look. A digital proof is prepared showing the expected result for your written approval.
Surface Preparation
PET cups are corona-treated before printing to increase surface energy and ensure strong ink adhesion. Without corona treatment, inks on PET can peel or chip — our process eliminates this risk.
White Underbase (If Selected)
For opaque vivid printing, a white ink layer is laid down first and UV-cured before any color ink is applied. This creates an opaque foundation that makes colors pop against the transparent cup wall.
Color Screen Printing
Each Pantone spot color is applied in a separate machine pass with rotary registration. Colors are cured under UV between passes to prevent mixing. Up to 3 color passes available.
Final UV Cure
Full UV cure locks all ink layers permanently to the PET surface. Cured ink is resistant to condensation, minor abrasion, and normal handling throughout the cup's service life.
Quality Inspection & Ship
Color accuracy, print registration, adhesion, and clarity are all verified before packing. Cups are sleeved and packed in protective cartons for nationwide ground shipping.

FAQ
Custom PET Clear Cup Questions — Answered
Why does PET show drink color better than other cups?
PET has the highest optical clarity of any cup plastic — essentially glass-like transparency. The cup walls are virtually invisible, allowing the drink's natural color to display fully. For colorful beverages like juices, cocktails, or boba tea, this transparency makes the drink itself a visual feature of the brand presentation.
Can I print on clear PET without a white underbase?
Yes. Without a white underbase, inks appear translucent — colors shift in appearance depending on the drink inside. A green ink over orange juice looks brownish; the same ink over clear water appears green. This technique works beautifully for minimalist or translucent-aesthetic designs. With a white underbase, colors are fully opaque and consistent regardless of drink color. We recommend specifying your preference when submitting artwork — we're happy to produce a proof showing both options.
Are PET cups BPA-free?
Yes. PET (polyethylene terephthalate) does not use bisphenol-A (BPA) in its chemistry. PET is inherently BPA-free — no special treatment or certification is needed. All HT Printers PET cups are BPA-free and FDA compliant for cold food and beverage contact.
Can PET cups hold hot beverages?
No. Standard PET cups are rated for cold beverages only. PET begins to soften around 140–150°F and can deform with very hot liquids, which may cause spills or burns. For hot coffee, tea, or soup, see our paper cups (rated to 200°F) or PS rigid cups (rated to 175°F).
Are PET cups recyclable?
Yes — PET is recycling code #1, the most widely recycled plastic in the USA. It is accepted at virtually every curbside recycling program nationally. The exterior screen print does not interfere with the recycling process.
What is the minimum order for PET cups?
MOQ is 250 units per design. Volume pricing steps down at 500, 1,000, 2,500, and 5,000+ units. Each design counts as a separate order with its own 250-unit MOQ.
Do printed PET cups work with standard lids?
Yes. Our PET cup dimensions match industry-standard dome lids, flat lids, and straw lids. PET is the standard cup material for bubble tea and cold-drink operations using dome lids. We can supply matching lids on request.
Can PET cups handle alcohol-based beverages?
Yes. PET has excellent chemical resistance to alcoholic beverages including beer, wine, cocktails, and mixed drinks. It is the preferred choice over PP for bar and brewery cup applications. For very high-proof spirits, both PET and PS perform well.
How does PET compare to PLA for cold drinks?
Both are crystal-clear cold-drink plastics. PET is more widely available, typically less expensive, and has better chemical resistance to acidic and alcoholic drinks. PLA is ASTM D6400 certified compostable, which matters for eco-committed brands. PET is recyclable #1 — choose PET when recycling infrastructure is the sustainable disposal option, PLA when commercial composting is available.
How does PET compare to PP for branded cups?
PET is crystal-clear (glass-like) while PP is translucent-to-opaque. PET is better when the drink color is a visual brand feature. PP is better when you want a solid opaque cup. PET has higher chemical resistance to acids and alcohol. PP is more flexible and slightly more crack-resistant under impact. Both are cold-drink-only materials.
What artwork preparation is needed for PET cup printing?
For opaque vivid colors: include a white underbase layer behind all colored elements in your artwork file. For translucent effects: submit artwork without a white background layer. All files should be vector (AI, EPS, PDF). Raster elements should be at least 300 DPI at final print size. Free artwork review is included with every order.
What is the lead time for custom PET cups?
Standard lead time is 7 business days from artwork approval. Rush production (3 business days) is available for a surcharge. Most US destinations receive orders within 1–3 business days after production via ground shipping.
Can I get a sample before ordering?
Yes — blank (unprinted) PET cup samples are available so you can check size, weight, lid fit, and clarity before committing to a printed order. Contact us to request samples in your preferred size.
Can I get a colored or tinted PET cup?
Standard PET cups are crystal-clear. Some tinted or frosted PET variants may be available for certain sizes and large order quantities. Contact us to discuss your requirements — we can source specific variants for qualified volume orders.
Are PET cups microwave-safe?
No. PET cups are not microwave-safe and are not designed for hot beverages or reheating. For microwave applications, a different container type is required. Our cups are intended for cold beverage service only.
What makes PET the premium choice for visual branding?
The combination of crystal clarity + vibrant screen printing creates an unmatched visual impact for cold drinks. The drink itself becomes part of the brand presentation — a naturally colored juice or layered cocktail in a clear branded cup is a premium product experience that opaque cups cannot replicate.
How does screen printing look on clear plastic?
Screen printing on clear PET produces vivid, opaque color when a white underbase is used. Without underbase, colors appear translucent and change appearance depending on what's inside the cup — which can be a design feature for the right brand. Fine lines and text hold well on PET's smooth rigid surface.
What resolution is needed for PET cup artwork?
Vector artwork (AI, EPS, PDF) is preferred and has no resolution limitation. Any raster/photo elements embedded in the file should be at least 300 DPI at final print size. Text below 6pt may not hold on the curved surface — we flag these during the free artwork review.
