About Paper Cups
The World's Most Used Branded Disposable Cup
Paper cups are the dominant branded cup format globally — and for good reason. They are the only single-use cup that works equally well for hot and cold beverages, covering espresso shots (4oz) through large iced drinks (32oz) with a single material choice. That versatility makes them the default for coffee shops, cafes, quick-service restaurants, and any business that serves both hot and cold beverages.
The structure of a paper cup is deceptively technical. The outer shell is made from food-grade paperboard — either standard or FSC-certified — that is screen-printed flat before being rolled into cup form. This flat-sheet printing process is unique to paper cups and gives them an advantage: the ink is applied to a completely flat surface, enabling sharper detail and more vibrant color than printing on a curved plastic surface. The result is that paper cups often produce the most visually impactful branded cups in our lineup.
Inside, the cup wall is lined with a moisture barrier — either PE (polyethylene) for standard use, or PLA (polylactic acid) for commercially compostable applications. The liner keeps the liquid from soaking through the paper while maintaining the structural integrity of the cup. For brands with environmental commitments, PLA-lined cups combined with FSC-certified paper create a genuinely certifiable sustainable product story.
HT Printers screen-prints paper cups in single wall and double wall constructions. Double wall cups — with their insulating air gap between two paper layers — are the professional choice for any hot beverage service. They eliminate the need for corrugated sleeves, reduce waste, and keep both the customer's hand and the drink at the right temperature significantly longer than single wall.

Common Applications
Who Uses Custom Printed Paper Cups?
Paper cups serve the broadest range of industries of any cup material — because they are the only cup that works for every temperature and every venue type.
Printing Capabilities
What We Can Print on Paper Cups
Paper cups offer the most flexible printing surface in our lineup. Here is what our industrial screen-printing process delivers on every order.
Up to 3 Spot Colors
Each color is a separate machine pass on the flat blank. Colors are stacked with precision registration for multi-color designs.
Full 360° Wrap Printing
Paper's flat pre-form construction allows true full-wrap designs. The artwork is mapped to the fan-shaped blank before forming — we handle the geometric conversion.
Pantone Color Matching
Available on 500+ unit orders. Provide your PMS reference and we match it precisely to the paper surface chemistry.
Fine Line & Detail
Flat-sheet printing on paper achieves finer line detail than printing on formed plastic. Hairline rules and small text hold cleanly.
Solid Color Fills
Large solid areas print richly and evenly on paper's absorbent surface. No streaking or ink pooling issues common on plastic cups.
FDA-Compliant Ink System
Water-based or UV-cure inks formulated for food-contact paper products. Exterior-print-only — the liner creates a complete barrier from the beverage.
Eco-Compatible Inks
For PLA-lined compostable cups, we use vegetable-oil-based inks that preserve the full compostable chain — cup, liner, and ink are all compostable.
Free Artwork Setup
Every order includes free artwork review, fan-shape conversion, and digital proof approval. We never charge for the first setup.
Production Process
From Artwork to Shipped — How We Print Paper Cups
Paper cups are printed flat before they are formed — giving them a unique production advantage over all plastic cup types.
Artwork Review & Proof
We review your file for resolution, color separations, and printability. A digital proof is sent for your written approval — we never print without it. Fan-shape artwork conversion is included at no charge.
Screen Preparation
Each Pantone color gets its own fine-mesh screen. Artwork is exposed onto the screen using UV light. Screen quality directly controls print sharpness — we use industrial-grade meshes rated to 200+ LPI.
Flat-Sheet Printing
Paper blanks (fan-shaped flat sheets) run through our industrial press. Colors are applied sequentially on the flat surface — the reason paper achieves finer detail than any formed plastic cup.
Ink Cure & Dry
Water-based inks are heat-cured at controlled temperatures. UV inks are cured instantly under high-intensity UV lamps. Ink is fully bonded before forming — eliminating any print distortion during cup shaping.
Cup Forming & Liner Application
Printed flat blanks are rolled and seam-welded into cup form. The PE or PLA liner is applied to the interior — after printing, so no ink ever contacts the beverage-facing surface.
Quality Inspection
Color accuracy, liner integrity, seam quality, print registration, and curl dimensions are all inspected before packing. Any cup that fails our standards is removed from the batch.
Sleeve-Pack & Ship
Cups are sleeved in paper wraps and packed in protective cartons. Standard UPS/FedEx ground shipping to all 50 states — most destinations receive orders within 1–3 business days after production clears.

FAQ
Custom Paper Cup Questions — Answered
What is the difference between single wall and double wall paper cups?
Single wall cups have one paper layer plus a liner — fine for cold drinks and short-hold hot drinks, but they get warm to the touch quickly. Double wall cups have two paper layers with an insulating air gap, keeping hot beverages comfortable to hold without a sleeve. Coffee shops and any business serving hot drinks should always use double wall.
Are custom printed paper cups compostable?
Our PLA-lined paper cups are ASTM D6400 certified compostable in commercial composting facilities — they break down within 90–180 days under industrial conditions. Standard PE-lined cups are not compostable. FSC-certified paper is available on both liner types for a more complete sustainability story.
Can paper cups hold both hot and cold beverages?
Yes — PE-lined and PLA-lined paper cups both handle hot and cold liquids. Single wall is best for cold drinks. Double wall is ideal for hot coffee, tea, and hot chocolate — the air gap insulation eliminates the need for a sleeve and keeps drinks warm longer.
What temperature can paper cups handle?
PE-lined cups are rated to 200°F (93°C) — safe for standard drip coffee and tea. PLA-lined cups are rated to 140°F — do not fill PLA cups with very hot beverages as the liner may soften above this threshold.
Are paper cup inks food-safe?
Yes. We use FDA-compliant water-based and UV-cure inks applied exclusively to the exterior of the flat blank before cup forming. The PE or PLA liner creates a complete physical barrier between the printed surface and the beverage — there is zero possibility of ink migration into the drink.
What is the minimum order for custom paper cups?
MOQ is 250 units per design. Volume pricing steps down at 500, 1,000, 2,500, and 5,000+ units. Each design requires its own screen setup and is treated as a separate order with its own MOQ.
Can I print a full-wrap design on paper cups?
Yes — full 360° wrap printing is available on all paper cup sizes. Because paper cups are printed flat before forming, you can achieve highly detailed and vibrant full-wrap designs that would be impossible on formed plastic cups. We handle the fan-shape artwork mapping at no charge.
What is FSC-certified paper?
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification guarantees that the paper fiber used in the cup was sourced from responsibly managed forests — not old-growth or illegally harvested timber. FSC-certified paper is available on both PE and PLA-lined cups and is popular with brands that have public sustainability commitments or ESG reporting requirements.
Do I need a sleeve with double wall hot cups?
No. The air gap in double wall cups provides enough insulation to hold hot drinks comfortably without a sleeve. This makes double wall the smarter choice for coffee shops — one cup handles the job that single wall plus a sleeve does, at a lower total cost-per-serve.
Do you offer Pantone color matching for paper cups?
Yes. Pantone matching is available on orders of 500+ units. Provide your Pantone Coated reference numbers with your artwork file and our print technicians will match them precisely to the paper surface chemistry. Expect minor variation between Pantone swatch books (printed on coated paper stock) and cups (uncoated paperboard).
What artwork format should I submit?
We accept AI, EPS, and PDF vector files — these are preferred. Raster elements (photos, gradients) should be at minimum 300 DPI at the final print size. Every order includes a free artwork review — we identify any issues and provide feedback before production begins. We never print without your written approval on the digital proof.
Can I order multiple cup designs in one order?
Yes. Each design requires its own screen setup and has its own 250-unit MOQ. Discounts may apply when ordering multiple designs simultaneously in the same cup size — ask about multi-design pricing when requesting your quote.
What is the standard production lead time?
Standard lead time is 7 business days from artwork approval. Rush production (3 business days) is available for a surcharge. Shipping time is additional — most US destinations receive orders within 1–3 business days via ground shipping after production clears.
How do I choose between PE-lined and PLA-lined cups?
Choose PE-lined if you need maximum hot-drink performance (up to 200°F), the lowest per-unit cost, and sustainability isn't a central brand story. Choose PLA-lined if you serve in a market with commercial composting access, sustainability is a core part of your brand, or you need ASTM D6400 certification on your packaging for compliance or marketing. Remember: PLA is rated to 140°F only.
Are PE-lined paper cups recyclable?
PE-lined paper cups require specialized pulping facilities to separate the paper fiber from the plastic liner. Most standard municipal recycling programs cannot process them — acceptance varies widely by city and facility. Check local guidelines. PLA-lined cups go to commercial composting, not standard recycling bins.
What sizes of paper cups do you print?
We print on 4oz, 6oz, 8oz, 10oz, 12oz, 16oz, 20oz, and 32oz paper cups — the broadest size range of any material in our lineup. This covers espresso shots through large iced drinks and everything in between.
What lid options are compatible with your paper cups?
Standard sip lids, travel lids, dome lids, and flat lids are all compatible depending on cup diameter. Paper cup diameters are fully industry-standardized, so lids from major suppliers fit without issue. We can source matching lids on request — tell us your cup size and drink type and we will recommend the right lid configuration.
How does paper compare to foam cups for hot drinks?
Both handle hot drinks up to 200°F. Foam provides slightly better insulation (EPS air cells outperform the paper air gap in double wall cups in head-to-head tests). Paper wins on print quality, size range, regulatory compliance (foam is banned in some states), and eco options. For most businesses, paper double wall is the professional choice. See our foam cup page for the full comparison.
Can I get a free sample before ordering?
Yes — we can provide blank (unprinted) paper cup samples in your preferred size so you can check weight, feel, and lid fit before committing to a printed order. Contact us to request samples.
How does paper compare to PP cups for cold drinks?
Both work for cold beverages. Paper is preferred for eco programs (PLA option) and short-hold cold service. PP is more rigid and better for high-volume cold drinks like smoothies or bubble tea where the cup is held for a longer time. See our PP cup page for a full comparison.
Can paper cups be printed with white ink?
White ink on white paper has no visible effect. For designs requiring a white element, we can work with colored paper stock or incorporate white as negative space in the design. Contact us for artwork consultation before ordering.
