Compostable vs Recyclable Cups: What's the Real Difference?

"Compostable" and "recyclable" get used almost interchangeably in casual conversation, but for custom cups they mean very different things — and picking the wrong claim can backfire with customers who care about sustainability.

Recyclable: PP, PET, and PS

PP (#5) and PET (#1) cups are recyclable through standard municipal recycling streams in most of the US, provided they're rinsed and your local program accepts that resin code. Printing ink is applied exterior-only and doesn't affect recyclability.

Compostable: PLA

PLA cups are made from plant starch and certified to ASTM D6400, meaning they break down under industrial composting conditions — not in a recycling bin, and not in a home compost pile. Putting a PLA cup in a recycling bin actually contaminates that recycling stream.

Why this distinction matters for your messaging

Telling customers a cup is "recyclable" when it's actually compostable (or vice versa) leads to the wrong disposal behavior and can read as greenwashing if a customer looks closely. Accurate labeling protects your brand's credibility with the exact audience most likely to scrutinize it.

Which one should you choose?

• Choose recyclable (PP/PET) if your market has strong plastics recycling infrastructure
• Choose compostable (PLA) only if your market has commercial composting access — otherwise the environmental benefit doesn't materialize
